Modern data-intensive applications have container-based microservices architecture, but serverless computing is a hot topic at the moment and some feel of it as competing technologies that will overcome traditional containers. The truth is that they have very little in common, but both make agile deployments and development much easier. That being said, it is not surprising why there are so many questions and misunderstandings popping up around. In the presented IoT environment, the key investigation was to demystify how container-based serverless computing can be used in an IoT platform and answer concerns. In terms of use-case, there is an explanation which one can be chosen and when, and show how these two great technologies complement each other. Here, we can find Kafka as a stable messaging platform and containers as microservices, whereas serverless functions are powering back-end tasks. This open-source setup is providing new possibilities for developers, which can save time and result in more flexibility, scalability, and efficiency. There is no doubt that container-based serverless computing will be the future.
