Azure Bicep Workshop
Description
Cloud computing turns infrastructure into code and that leads to a lot of advantages: We can collaborate over code, easily share it, review it, generalize and reuse it, build reusable components from it, automatically verify it, etc. Professional cloud projects bet the farm on Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC). In this session, long-time Azure MVP and MS Regional Director Rainer Stropek shows you how to be successful with Azure’s native IaC language "Bicep". Rainer uses a series of live examples covering not just basics, but also more complex IaC scenarios that are typically in practice.
Content & Process
- Block 1
- Quick general summary about Infrastructure-as-Code
- Introduction in Azure Resource Manager (ARM)
- From ARM Templates to Bicep – how do these technologies relate?
- Block 2 and 3
- Authoring Bicep templates in VSCode
- Bicep authoring fundamentals
- Practical examples
- Block 4
- More advanced Bicep topics
- Bicep modules, registries
- Bicep and CI/CD (examples with GitHub Actions)
- Practical examples
Audience & Requirements
Attendees should have a good understanding about cloud computing in general and at least basic knowledge about Microsoft Azure. Deep, technical knowledge about Azure ARM and related technologies is not required as this will be discussed during the first block of the workshop. Attendees should have decent experience in working with code including Git source control mechanisms.
Rainer will show all samples live during the workshop. Attendees can decide if they want to follow along some or all of the examples. People who want to follow along need the following prerequisites:
- Azure subscription in which the attendees have admin privileges
- Current version of Visual Studio Code with the following extensions
- Azure CLI Tools
- Azure Resource Manager (ARM) Tools
- Deploy to Azure
- Bicep
- Remote Development
- Live Share
- Current version of the Azure CLI (will be used to handle Bicep in this workshop) including the Bicep CLI (see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-resource-manager/bicep/install#azure-cli)
- The prepared samples work best on Linux with Bash. For Windows users, we recommend using WSL2.
