Developer portals provide important information and tools for developers and help teams by giving a uniform overview of all the microservices, libraries, data pipelines, websites, etc. Backstage (backstage.io) is an open-source platform for building such developer portals. It was originally developed at Spotify as an internal tool and donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. It has core features designed to enable organization and empower DevOps teams and solve infrastructure complexity and to manage their software development process more effectively. Backstage provides a centralized repository for software development assets, such as code and documentation, and makes it easy for developers to search for and reuse these assets. In addition, it provides a suite of tools to help developers collaborate more effectively, such as a project management system, a code review tool, and continuous integration solutions. Regardless of the level of DevOps maturity inside an organization, the need for a catalog to track services quickly becomes apparent as the number of microservices developed increases. In this session I want to give an overview of the key features of Backstage and how to make services and their metadata discoverable for all relevant stakeholders.
