When we look to improve our teams or our organisations, we often reach for a maturity model. Such models first prompt an assessment that grades us on the model’s scale and then offers recipes to pursue greatness. It might tell us that we don’t visualise well, that our stories aren’t perfectly formed or that we haven’t thought holistically enough and what we should do to get better. But. Do maturity models really help us, especially from an organisational perspective? Do they motivate collective learning and do they help solve the real problems we are facing as teams or team of teams?

One of the issues with the maturity models that we often use, is that they are context free. They don’t consider our environment, they don’t reflect the challenges and the specific needs we have in our context.

Stephen Kemmis (@KemmisStephen) explains that learning can only be observed when we see that practice changes. Investigating learning through the lens of practices shifts the focus from what we know to what we do (and how we do it). How does that help with the problems of conventional maturity models? How does it improve our ability to assess our maturity?

Maturity Mapping, originally dreamed up by Chris McDermott (@chrisvmcd), is a visualisation method, based on Social Practice Theory, Wardley Mapping and informed by Cyenfin, which focuses on practices as the unit of analysis.

In this session Marc will present what Chris and he have learned in developing this practice and how it is unlocking how to think about collective improvement.
